California’s Proposition 12

Niman Ranch Compliant with California’s Proposition 12

Niman Ranch Sow farrowing PigletsCalifornia’s Proposition 12, passed in 2018, requires farmers to provide more space for egg-laying hens, breeding pigs and calves raised for veal including that these animals be able to stand up, lie down, turn around and extend their limbs. It would also ban the sale of products in the state that do not meet the new standards.

Pork producers in California must be in compliance with the new law starting 2022. Prop 12 also applies to products raised outside of California that are to be sold in California. A similar law in Massachusetts, Question 3, also takes effect in 2022.

Niman Ranch pork is an ideal option for retailers and distributors that are looking for pork that complies with Proposition 12 and Question 3. We offer written guarantees to our customers that we are indeed Prop 12 and Question 3 compliant.

Niman Ranch has always been in compliance with Proposition 12 and goes much further, with all farms third-party certified by Humane Farm Animal Care (aka Certified Humane®) and all animals raised outdoors or in deeply bedded pens with a minimum of 150 percent more space per sow than the current industry standard.
